Robert Dean Niss, 95, of Pawnee City, passed away December 22, 2023, at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Robert was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, on February 8, 1928, to Frank F. and Emma A. (Heuppelsheuser) Niss. He graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1945, then served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 -1947.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Collene M. Sheely on November 2, 1947. Together, they began a lifetime focused on family and farming. Bob was a dedicated farmer, and especially enjoyed raising livestock. Attending livestock sales was a favorite pastime of Bob’s. He was a lifelong member of Frieden’s United Church of Christ, serving on the board for several terms. He was the only member of his confirmation class to celebrate 75 years of membership in the church.

He was the treasurer of the District 14 School for many years. He was a founding member of the Pawnee County Rural Water District 1, and proudly served on the Board for 48 years.

Bob loved reading westerns, and the “library ladies” in town kept him well supplied with books!

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Collene; his children, Kathleen Evasco, Lincoln, Randall Niss (Deborah) of Pawnee City; sister, Hannah Edwards, brother, Keith Niss; and grandchildren Erin (Tony) Dutter, Kyle (Amanda) Evasco, Derek (Amanda) Niss, Dani Niss, and Kent (Katie) Niss.

Bob is also survived by greatgrandchildren Weston, Reid, Lila, Sullivan, Cal, Emma, Eleanor, and Rosanne Niss; Carson, Delaney, Porter, Wynne, and Georgie Dutter; and Jackson, Asher, and Cooper Evasco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Eleanor Blume and Wanda Granstaff, daughter Sharon, son-in-law David Evasco, grandson Bryce Niss, and great granddaughter Moriah Dutter According to Bob’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held.
