Pawnee City honors the fallen heroes

Inclement weather kept the flags from being placed Saturday at the Pawnee County Courthouse this year, but by the time Monday rolled around it was bright and sunny for Memorial Day.

The Pawnee City ceremony took place at the city cemetery with Veterans Service Officer Larry Bradbury acting as emcee. He was there in place of Harold Schlender who we lost last fall and will be sorely missed. Bradbury did a great job as did all those who paused to honor our fallen on this special day.

It was Schlender who last year asked Ret. Gen. Roger Lempke to give the address. He is from Tecumseh and was a classmate of Pawnee City’s Bruce Haughton. During Lempke’s country school days, he was told by Schlender’s wife, Virginia.
