Borcher, Mathewson crowned at Pawnee City Homecoming

The Pawnee City Homecoming court was made up, from left, Hayden Meyer, Shelby Hundley, Karli Cabrera, Colten Fisher, Courtney Mathewson, Scott Borcher, Brooke Bowhay, Collin Moser, J.P. Schiffbauer, Abby Mathewson, Kellen Habegger, and Ann Cline.
Courtney Mathewson was crowned Queen and Scott Borcher was crowned King after the game Thursday for Homecoming. It was a chilly night but spirits were high despite the Indians losing their battle with No. 1 Exeter-Milligan, 68-8. Last year's King and Queen, Austin Smith and Paige Freeman, were on hand to crown the new King and Queen.

Two Pawnee City students make sure needy kids have clothing

There are many charitable acts going around the area, but there was one last Friday out at the high school in Pawnee City. Pawnee City High School junior Hannah Davis and sophomore Sarah Conroy conducted a community closet for needy kids at school. People brought clothes in for donation and some came in to find clothes.

Pep rally brings out the best and funniest in Indians

Freshmen, freshmen don't be shy, what's your Indian battle cry? The answer was V-I-C-T-O-R-Y as senior football player Scott Borcher, led each class in this cheer at the Homecoming pep rally Thursday. That was just part of the fun as the school engaged in a dodge ball contest in the afternoon before the whole school marched down town with the pep band to lead them. Under the direction of Andrea Veleba, the pep band played the fight song and everyone joined in clapping along.

Harvest coming in with great yields

A few days off because of wet ground, area farmers were back in their fields Thursday taking in beans. It was a welcome break at Southeast Cooperative in Burchard. Manager Jeff Wehrbein said the previous week had seen  0- 0 trucks a day dumping their harvest.

Veterans Memorial granite stones placed

It was a day for smiles and admiration. The new Pawnee County Veterans Memorial came to town on semi-trailers, but finally arrived in the heart of many who have undertaken this project.

Spooks love this time of year

Dale Buman sits with his Halloween decorations at his home. He and his wife Roxann make the display from the decorations they have left over from their Halloween party at the Pawnderosa on Oct. 11. Six campers joined the fun.
Time to dig out the Darth Vader mask or that Sleeping Beauty costume you've recently purchased. Halloween is here! Here is a roundup of where to go to Trick or Treat. The Table Rock Community Foundation is sponsoring a  ostume party on Saturday, Oct. 26from 2-4 p.m. The event takes place at the Legion Hall in Table Rock. The party is open from babies to sixth graders.

Love of flying and a Cessna airplane passed down from father to son

The Republican reporter was carried to new heights Wednesday morning – about a thousand feet over Pawnee and Johnson Counties. He was riding with pilot Bruce Bernadt, who has an airport off Highway 4 near Steinauer. Before the Pawnee City airport was built, Bernadt had the only airstrip in Pawnee County. You've seen the building with an air sock just beyond a hill probably a million times going to and from places west of Pawnee City. Bernadt is trying to get people excited about flying. He gave six rides to people at the recent fly-in at the Pawnee City airport.

Lewiston Homecoming Royalty

Connor Barr and Hannah Christen were crowned King and Queen at Homecoming in Lewiston. Hannah Christen is the daughter of Jerome and Melinda Christen. She has been a member of the volleyball and basketball teams for four years, track team and cheerleader for two years, and drill team for one year. Connor Barr is son of Delton and Nancy Barr. Connor has been a member of the football team for four years and the basketball and track teams for three years. He has also been involved with LCS, FFA, PAC and Band and has been Class President.

Supt. Grizzle testifies about state aid formula to legislative committee

Pawnee City Schools Superintendent Stephen Grizzle testified before a legislative committee Monday in Omaha. About 100 people were there and about 25 testified. The meeting lasted about 2 and half hours. This hearing was one of several being planned around the state that seek feedback on the state aid formula and how it can be improved. “I was the only small fish there (testifying),” Grizzle said. Jack Moles, superintendent at Johnson County Central, and Tim Heckenlively, superintendent of Falls City Public School, rode along with Grizzle but didn't testify.
