Jean E. Crom

Jean E. Crom, 90, died on July 16, 2019 surrounded by family. She was born on September 17, 1928 in Wymore, Nebraska, to Maude Edith Lewis and Roy William Howe.  She grew up on a farm near Barneston, Nebraska and graduated from Barneston High School in 1946.  She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and graduated with a degree in Home Economics in teaching in 1950. As a senior in college, she met Rex Crom, who drove several students to Second Presbyterian Church to sing in the choir. They were married at the Wymore Methodist Church on December 23, 1950.

Robert “Dallas” Bowhay

Robert "Dallas" Bowhay was born on July 18, 1931 on the family farm in rural Pawnee County, to Clyde and Helen (Hart) Bowhay. Dallas passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age of 88, at Pawnee Community Memorial Hospital. He attended country school in rural Pawnee County and graduated from Barneston High School in 1949. He then attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri for two years where he played football.

Betty JoAnn (Bock) Thomas

Betty JoAnn (Bock) Thomas of Liberty, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Pawnee County Hospital. Betty was born February 22, 1941 to Leslie A. and Mabel M. (Heuppelsheuser) Bock at their home in rural Pawnee County Nebraska. She was baptized and later confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Bern, Kansas. Betty attended grade school at rural East Star School and attended high school at Pawnee City High School.

After high school Betty attended Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing from 1958-1961, graduating with an RN diploma degree. She practiced her nursing profession all of her life until retiring in December, 2007.

On September 17,1961 Betty married Darrell E. Thomas. To this union two children were born, a son Ricky Lee, August 1, 1962 and daughter, Kimberly Ann, September 18, 1963.

Robert Snyder

Robert Snyder, 82, of Odell, Nebraska passed away Monday, July 1, 2019.

Robert was born to Cyril and Alvina (Wolf) Snyder in rural Pawnee City, Nebraska. The fourth of five children, Robert lived most of his childhood on a farm near Pawnee City.

In his youth, Robert enjoyed the outdoors, playing the tuba in band, and playing basketball and football. He was even being recruited to play college football. However, ready to be done with classrooms, Robert chose employment instead, and also served his country in the Army reserves.

While working for the railroad, Robert met his future wife, Peggy on a blind date. They married on July 24, 1960. From this union came three sons and two daughters.

After a few years, Robert began a job at Consumers Public Power District, which later became Nebraska Public Power district. He worked there more than 30 years, until his retirement in 1999.

Lloyd R. Stepan

Lloyd R. Stepan, 87 of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Sumner Place, Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born on February 16, 1932 in Table Rock to Henry and Adeline (Kouba) Stepan. In his younger years, Lloyd farmed with his dad in Pawnee County, before beginning his 36 year-long career in 1964 with the Pawnee County Roads Department as a Motor Grader. He married Viola Roschewski on January 1,2005 and they lived in Lewiston. Lloyd was an avid gardener and loved raising water lilies. He was also a very talented woodworker, often depicting farm equipment he used as a boy.

He was preceded in death by his wife Viola, step-son, Michael Roschewski; stepdaughter-in-law, Sheila Roschewski; parents Henry and Adeline; Step-father, Nello (Bud) Parker; and step-siblings, Ivan Parker and Carlene Thompson.

Betty (Reeves) Clark

Betty Joan (Reeves) Clark 82, of Tecumseh,  formerly of Pawnee City, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh.  She was born on December 5, 1936 to Arthur and Berniece (Bray) Reeves in rural Nemaha County, Nebraska.

She grew up on the farm near Peru and attended several country elementary schools and graduated from Peru Prep High School. She went to Peru State College for a semester.  Betty worked at a restaurant for a while and then started working in the cafeteria at Peru State and later cooked at the Bob Inn for many years.  From there she received the nickname “Bobcat Betty.”  Betty retired in 1988 after working there for 38 years. Betty received an honorary doctorate from Peru State College.  She was a mother to many, many college students during that time period.

Shirley B. (Makinster) Tallman

Shirley B. (Makinster) Tallman, 87 of Pawnee City passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019. She was born October 6, 1931, at her family’s home in Lamar, Nebraska, to William and Nellie (Edwards) Makinster.

Shirley grew up in the rural farming community of Lamar. She attended Lamar Grade School, and Chase County High School in Imperial. She graduated in 1950. Shirley went to church, and trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior at church camp when she was 10 years old.

She married family friend, Ray Sidney Tallman, in 1950. While Sid was away in the Army serving in Korea, she worked with her father on the farm. Shirley and Sid had four children, Cyndie, Rock, Ronnie and Robin.

Barbara Jean Chambers

Barbara Jean Chambers was at her home in Argyle, Texas with her loving family when she passed away on June 13, 2019 after a difficult three yearlong battle with ovarian cancer.  Barbara was born in Humboldt, Nebraska on November 15, 1949 to her parents Arthur and Ardis Hunzeker. She graduated from Pawnee City Nebraska High School in 1967.  Barbara obtained her B.A. in 1973 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she met her husband Keith Chambers whom she married in 1969.  She very much enjoyed teaching small children, working in pre-schools in both Dallas and Texarkana, retiring when she moved with her husband to Jacksonville, TX in 1997.

Sharon Kay (Barker) Watts

Sharon Kay (Barker) Watts, 70, Campbell, Nebraska passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska. Sharon was born on March 3, 1949 to Samuel T. and Thelma E. (Brewer) Barker in Humboldt, Nebraska.  She was the fourth child of seven born to this marriage.  She spent her childhood years in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  She also attended school there and in her senior year she contracted rheumatic fever which kept her from graduating.  On March 16, 1968 she married Frank R. Watts in Wymore, Nebraska.  After moving around for a few years, they decided to make their home in Nelson, Nebraska.  To this union six children were born.  While raising her family was her greatest passion she also enjoyed caring for the elderly.  She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in many different facilities throughout her life.  The family made their final home in Campbell, Nebraska in 2004.

Erma "Jean" James

Erma “Jean” (Blecha) James, 88, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on June 30, 1930, in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Emil and Emma (Horalek) Blecha. Jean’s father died when Jean was 6 months old and her mother later married Merritt Biggs. Jean was raised southwest of Humboldt where she attended Dry Branch District #2 country school until 1941 when her family moved to Nebraska City. She attended Nebraska City Junior High until 1943, and then the family moved to El Cerrito, California. Jean finished her schooling in June of 1947, graduating with honors from El Cerrito High School. Jean had begun working in January of 1947 for Attorney Tsar N. Calfee in Richmond, California.
