Once you get horses in your blood, you can’t get them out. That’s how Katie Lenhardt describes her love for rodeo. She is a barrel racer and break-away calf roper and will be here one of the two nights of the rodeo at the Pawnee County Fair. The rodeo, now in its 21st year with Pawnee County, will be held Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25. The start time is 8 p.m. both nights. The rodeo is affiliated with Midstates Assn. and the IRA and URA, all rodeo organizations.

Ken Wherry along with Vic Faesser complete charity ride for hunger

Ken Wherry just completed the NUMB tour, a biking event that had Vic Faesser of Pawnee City going along. The tour covered 300 miles and started at Ogallala, went to Sydney, out to Haxtun, Colo., back to Imperial, NE back to Ogallala. It ran from June 27 to July 1. NUMB stands for Nebraska United Methodist Bike tour and it raises money for the fight against hunger.

Tecumseh Legion teams feature several area athletes this summer

TECUMSEH - If you drive past the Tecumseh Legion field this summer you might see some familiar faces on the Tecumseh Junior and Senior Legion Baseball teams. Since neither Pawnee City nor Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer have a Legion team, several area athletes decided to play for Tecumseh this summer. Despite the weather and recent postponements the two teams are trying to make up games along with keeping their regularly scheduled games.

SE Nebraska All-Star Games

BEATRICE - The West squads dominated the East squads in two out of the three Southeast Nebraska All-Star games held at the SCC Truman Center over the weekend, but the East had their own highlights of the games. On Friday night, June 19th, the East and West All-Star Volleyball teams took the court in a best three out of five set match. After some long rallies, the West eventually swept all three sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, but the East won the guaranteed fourth set that was played 25-22.

Brandon Edelman wins Pawnee Classic

Brandon Edelman of Bern, Kan. won the Pawnee Classic Saturday with a time of 18:45. Allie Binder of Table Rock was the first female with a time of 22:32. Other place winners include: Masters over 40 male – Alan Haverkamp, Bern, 20:43; first female masters, Brenda Peschel, Axtell, Kan, 22:46.

Johnson County Hospital Physical Therapy offers free sports performance camp for area athletes

TECUMSEH - The Johnson County Hospital Physical Therapy Department is offering a free Sports Performance Camp for all 6th-12th grade athletes from area schools to help reduce injury risk and improve their performances. The camp will be held every Monday and Thursday from June 29th-July 30th from 4:15-5:00 p.m. at the Johnson County Central Track located at 358 N. 6th Street in Tecumseh, Nebraska. The facts are that #1) 45.9%-54% of athletic injuries are a result of improper training vs. traumatic injuries, as found in research by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. #2) Only six out of ten athletes return to their sport after an ACL tear. #3) 80% of people who previously sprained their ankle will have reoccurrence.

BEATRICE - Southeast Community College would like to announce the 27th annual Southeast Nebraska All-Star Basketball games on Saturday,  une 20th and the 26th annual All-  Star Volleyball game on Friday, June 19th. All games will be held at the Truman Center on the SCCBeatrice Campus.

Katie Schlund lands a Master Angler Crappie

With all this rain, what we need is a good fish story. This one involves a good fisherman, or should we say fisherwoman? Katie Schlund of Pawnee City, who has just graduated from Peru St. College with a bachelor’s, recently qualified for her second Master Angler award. The Nebraska Game and Parks has the Master Angler award for outstanding catches. You have to meet the minimum requirements for the fish you catch in order to qualify.
