Adult Spelling Bee spells fun afternoon

By Ray Kappel

George Tomek had a word to spell at the Adult Spelling Bee held at the Rock Schoolhouse Sunday. It was ‘hammer’. He thought for a minute, scratched his chin, and wrote on the board ‘Menards’ to the laughter of the audience.

It was fun day for the 15 or so people who showed up, six of who competed in the spelling contest. Pam Sunneberg won in the 9th round with ‘Impasse’. A very close second was Vicki Bursovsky and third was Madison Fender, Pam’s granddaughter. Madison is a seventh grader at Pawnee City Schools.

Rain and more rain

Nearly six inches of rain has fallen over the area in the past week. This has put harvest on hold and made for a week in which the sun got through for only a couple of days.

Jon Howard, who lives near Highway 4 and 50, said, in his NeRain gauge he has received 5.9 inches in the last 6 days.

A report from Burchard said rain amounts were from about 5.25" to a little under 7 in the area. Don Bloss, who lives east of Pawnee City on Highway 8, said “We got.5.6 inches of rain through all of this. The fields I checked were a little soft, probably pretty slick.

The crops don't appear to be hurt any, although I'm sure the stalk quality is going to be hurt some.

Pawnee City Memorial Hospital/Clinic honored for Patient Satisfaction

Every year in September, the National Rural Health Association presents awards to Critical Access Hospitals that perform well in 3 categories: Overall Performance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction. The Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States are recognized in each category. Critical Access Hospitals are rural hospitals that must meet certain criteria, such as a limit of no more than 25 beds and a rural location which deems them as “critical” to the population that is served.

For the second time, Pawnee County Memorial Hospital has been recognized in the Patient Satisfaction category. The information used to determine the hospital rankings is based on the results of patient surveys that are completed after a hospital stay. Patients often wonder why it is important to complete these surveys. The most noteworthy answer is that the information helps an organization understand how patient’s feel about their care.

Burchard UMC celebrates 135 years

A bit of local history will be made Sunday, October 28 in Burchard.

The Burchard United Methodist Church is celebrating its 135th anniversary. The celebration starts at 12:30 p.m. with a covered dish luncheon at the Community Building. Meat and beverages provided. That is followed by a 1:30 p.m. service at the church.

The town of Burchard was founded in August, 1881. The history records state the town had two general stores, two hardware stores, one drug store and one dry goods store. They also had a Presbyterian and Methodist Episcopal Society. The Society in 1882 may have served as a preaching point on one of the early circuits traveled by Methodist preachers.
