The third week in May will be a busy time for County Judge CurtiMaschman. On May 17 his son John graduates from the University of Iowa Law School and the next day, his son Joseph graduates Creighton University. Joseph is completing his undergrad degree and is headed to law school too.

My name is Darin Lovercheck and I am excited to have the opportunity to be the Principal at HTRS for the 2023 - 2024 school year. I look forward to embracing the Titan way of doing things and continuing the success set forth by previous administrators.

LAST POLKA PARTY OF 2023

First, let me tell you about the last band to play in the Spring Polka Party series in rural Du Bois at the hall of the Zapadni Ceska Bratrska Jednota. That’s Czech for Western Fraternal Life Association but it doesn’t cross the tongue with nearly the same snap as the acronym ZCBJ.

POPPY DAY in PAWNEE CITY May 5th 2023

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #168 will be at the Thriftway grocery store to distribute poppies to honor the fallen and support the living veterans. The Flanders Field poppy is a recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain.

Shopping for new plants

This is the time of year we really get the gardening bug. I would wait until closer to the end of this month to do much by way of garden cleanup and new plantings to avoid having to cover things up.

While perusing a list of unusual holidays, I stumbled across one dubbed “Take a Chance Day.” This holiday is observed each April 23. According to the trusty Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “take a chance” is an idiom that means to do something that could either have good OR bad results.

2023 Mudecas Track Meet held on Monday

ADAMS - The 2023 Mudecas Track and Field Meet was postponed from Saturday, April 22nd to Monday,April 24th due to inclement weather. With the numerous schools and competitors in attendance, there were 8 places awarded in each event.
