In spite of the sub zero temperatures a snow covered pond will not freeze as solid as you might expect. Snow can act like insulation and limit how solid ice can get especialy if the snow covered the ice before it became frozen thick. This pickup was on the ice at the site of the curling competition near Elk Creek this year. It found a weak spot and fell through.
