Roger Farwell Herr

Roger Farwell Herr, 74, of Glen Cove, New York, died Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Glen Cove Hospital.

Son of Florence Farwell Herr (Fred), Roger was born March 9, 1948, in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Winnetka, IL, where he excelled in piano, ran track and cross country at New Trier East High School, and became an Eagle Scout.

After graduating from New Trier in 1966, he attended Colgate University, after which he began working for JP Morgan & Co. He graduated from Columbia Business School in 1979 and had a long and successful career on Wall Street until he retired from Credit Suisse Securities, LLC, in 2014. He continued to work privately until complications from ALS prevailed last year.

Roger met Nubia Malenchek in 1998 at an Irish pub in midtown Manhattan, where they became a steadfast couple and married June 2, 2012. Roger embraced Nubia’s young daughters, Giselle and Rachel, and nurtured them with devotion. Now twenty-nine, Giselle reflects that, “Roger was my role model. He was a father to me and my sister, and he lovingly provided us with many opportunities we would not have had otherwise. He was the captain of our ship and he will be dearly missed, though he is with us in spirit.”

With his mother, Roger created the Florence Farwell Herr and Roger F. Herr ’70 Endowed Fund at Colgate, which provides support for religious March 9, 1948 ~ February 14, 2023

activities and programs on campus.

Growing up, Roger, his sister, and mother spent many hot sum mers visiting friends and relatives in Du Bois. Of particular interest to the children was stopping in at the bank (then State Bank of Du Bois) to see Grandpa L.C. Farwell, who always had spare change for pop and sweets, much to Florence’s consternation.

Roger was a member of the Willow Society of Colgate University, the University Club of New York, a dedicated member of St. John’s of Lattingtown, Locust Valley, NY, Bible studies both in NY and Vero Beach, FL, and was an ardent member and supporter of Oakcliff Sailing Center and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, NY.

He loved biking with his buddies on Long Island, fly fishing, and walking the country roads of Du Bois, where he, with his sister, farmed the acreage their mother and her sister, Phanetta Farwell Bohm, first farmed over eighty years ago.

He is survived by Nubia Herr, Giselle and Rachel Malenchek, mother-in-law Gladys Castro, Evelyn Herr Anderson (Judd) of Baltimore, MD, nieces Christina Menchini (Zach) and Clare Anderson (Jay DeRose) and their young families out West.

A memorial service at St. John’s of Lattingtown, Locust Valley, NY, will be held June 17, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to als-ny.org.
