Jason Eugene Brinegar

Jason Eugene Brinegar, 49, a beloved member of the City of Marysville, passed away on March 13, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children.

Friends and family are invited on March 22, from 4-8 p.m. to sign the registration book at Kinsley Mortuary. The family will be present 5-7 p.m.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., March 23 at Venue 36 located at 1195 Pony Express Hwy, Marysville. Speakers will include Tommy Brinegar, John Haefele, Scott Wayman, Caleb Wood, Brandi Brinegar, Scott Brown and Ashlinne Brinegar. Music will include “Funeral For a Friend”, Sam Stueve performing “Piano Man”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Free Bird.”

The honorary pallbearers will be John Haefele, Eric Ketter, Parker Price and Scott Wayman.

Jason was born on April 6, 1974, in Marysville, KS, son of Tommy Eugene I and Christine Lynn (McManus) Brinegar. He attended Washington County High School and graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1992. In high school, Jason played football, basketball, baseball, and pole vaulted for the track team. In 1996, he graduated from Ottawa University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Throughout his time as an undergrad, he was a wide receiver for the Ottawa Braves Football Team. He then attended the University of Kansas Law School and graduated in 2000 with his Juris Doctorate.

During high school, Jason worked at his grandparents’ grocery store, Nider’s Thriftway in Pawnee City. Jason stocked the shelves, did carry out for customers, and occasionally emptied a 12 pack of soda and refilled it with beer for himself and his friends.

After graduating from Ottawa University, Jason taught special education at Anderson County High School. He also mowed lawns and worked for UPS loading trucks and took naps in the trucks when work was slow.

After graduating from law school, Jason was accepted into the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps but decided he didn’t want to raise his kids away from family.

Jason began his career in law in 2000 at Galloway, Wiegers, & Heeney. In 2002, Jason joined the practice as a partner and the firm became Galloway, Wiegers, & Brinegar. He has been the managing partner since 2013 after the loss of his mentor Ed Wiegers. In 2011, GWB expanded to have a location in Seneca servicing Nemaha County.

In 2020, Jason started Pony Express Title Company.

Jason served on many local boards and spent his free time April 6, 1974 March 13, 2024

promoting the communities GWB serves. Some of these include Sons of American Legion, Rotary Club, Library Board, Main Street, and Marshall County Law Library. Jason’s favorite part about being an attorney was helping people, and he needed no accolades for the work that he did.

Jason absolutely loved to travel, especially to the beach. He loved to swim in the ocean and “bust waves”, all while wearing his awesome goggles. On November 24, 2011, he married Libby Wassenberg on the beach in Cancun, Mexico.

He loved attending concerts with his wife, Libby, even the ones she drug him to that he didn’t exactly want to attend. Jason also loved to go to the casino and sit at the craps table for hours, with a drink in his hand. He encouraged his close friends and his family to join him on his travels and always said “take the trip”.

He loved being a coach. He started the Youth Football Program in Marysville and coached for many years, often holding practices at his home. In 2016, Jason built the “Baseball Shed” at his house, where area youth came to practice baseball. He also coached youth baseball for his son’s teams and after they graduated high school he continued to coach. Jason was also a coach for the Marysville Junior High Football Team and Marysville High School Baseball Team. While he didn’t coach this, Jason loved to attend his daughter’s cheerleading and dance competitions and traveling to watch her cheer for football and basketball games when she was in college. When he wasn’t coaching for the high school baseball team, he announced the games at Feldhausen Field. For many years, Jason did color-commentary for KNDY radio for MHS Football games. On Friday afternoons during football season, he would leave the office and say it was time for him to go to his “real job”.

Jason also enjoyed relaxing on his back deck, grilling and smoking meat, floating in his pool, and playing ball with his dogs Roni and Cam.

His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving. After his children all graduated from high school, he began the tradition of taking his family on Thanksgiving Vacations to various places. The night before Thanksgiving was always Family Game Night and those were his favorite times with his family. Jason loved to make handmade birthday cards for his children every year, filling them with embarrassing pictures of them. Music was a big part of Jason’s life. Although he wasn’t musically talented, his sons Tommy and Nathan are, and he loved to watch them play gigs or even just practice at the house. He loved to sing karaoke with his daughter Ashlinne, even though he was tone-deaf.

He was preceded in death by his father; and maternal grandparents, Roy & Linda Nider.

Survivors include his wife, Libby; Tommy Eugene Brinegar II (Kylie Kroeger), Ashlinne Elisabeth Brinegar (Anthony Cahill), Caden Michael Brinegar and Nathan Daniel Parmentier (Alyssa Scott); mother, Christine Lynn Mc-Manus and step-father Michael McManus; sister, Tara Dawn (Jason) Venema and their children, Evan & Easton, Brandi Lynn (Liz) Brinegar, and child Wyatt; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jason fully lived life, and loved his family with all that he could. He was so proud of each of his children. Some people only knew him as the attorney, but his family and close friends knew him as the funny, loving, family man. He affected so many people on so many different levels, and he will be missed dearly.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
