The story behind the church bell in the country

There's a story behind this church bell that sits by itself in a field east of Pawnee City a few miles. It was the St. John’s Reformed Church and in 1973 the original building got struck by lightning and burnt beyond repair. The congregation voted unanimously to build a new church.

City signs maintenance contract for water tower

Maquire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D., will be taking care of the Pawnee City Water Tower now and in the future after Monday night’s City Council meeting. The City agreed to pay $47,296 for four years starting in 2021 and $14,440 for the fifth year for a maintenance contract with Maquire.

The flags at Pawnee City High School

Ray Kappel/Republican Veteran Larry Borcher gave a presentation to several Pawnee City High School students on Wednesday about proper flag etiquette so that they know how to display and handle the flag properly. Flags could be seen flying from students’ vehicles last week.

Beware of thefts, property crimes

As the economy gets worse, theft and property crimes become more prevalent. At the present time the majority of our local thefts are easily portable items being taken by meth users and sold or traded for drugs.
