SNAP Benefits Paused in November Due to Federal Shutdown

Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), at the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), will pause Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on October 29 due to the federal government shutdown.

Monday, November 10th the VFW Auxiliary will be handing out Poppies.

A BRIEF HISTORYSince 1922, the “Buddy” Poppy has been an integral part of the VFW community. As VFW’s official memorial flower, the Poppy represents the blood shed by American service members. It reiterates, the VFW will not forget their sacrifices.

Public Service Commission Fires Up Winter Protections With Cold Weather Rule Starting Nov. 1

LINCOLN – As temperatures begin to plunge, the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) is reminding natural gas customers of its Cold Weather Rule that provides additional protection from service disconnection Nov. 1 through March 31.

Lewiston Methodist Church Renovated and Repurposed

The former Lewiston Methodist Church, established in 1888, has been renovated into the Lewiston Community Building.The 137 year old building had been renovated through the years but has most recently been completely restored to be utilized by the community for decades to come.

Murals Adorn Steinauer Buildings

In October 2024, the Village of Steinauer was fortunate to have completed their first mural. This mural began with a generous donation and is painted on the former Schmit garage. The mural depicts a replica of Steinauer’s Main Street in the early 1900s.

As the leaves begin to turn, the farmers fell their crops, and the air becomes a little crisper, it is natural to begin to think about Thanksgiving. To be honest, at one time several years ago, Thanksgiving became my favorite holiday because it was nearly stress-free.

Halloween at the ZCBJ Hall

Last week kids and their families filled the Hall for a Halloween party that included a Spooky Trail and a hayrack ride. This week was the night for grownups.The band was a favorite one, Shawn Cole with “dRUnk Monkey,” and plenty of folks showed up in costume. $400 in cash prizes were handed out.
